Tips for protesting joyfully
You might have seen protest guidance from actor and Zen Buddhist priest Peter Coyote. He offers advice for organizers as well as attendees, including dress like you’re going to church and protest in silence while letting your signs do the talking. These are great suggestions, especially for contentious gatherings like anti-ICE in LA.
The stakes are high, as the current administration continues to assault the environment, civil and human rights, and the social safety net. We’re mad as hell, but Sub Shop Press believes in the power of joyful protest, which can create unity, sustain activism, and disarm opposition. We offer the following tips for protesting joyfully:
- Make a sign. We promote positive messages that bring people together, but we also appreciate sentiments that come from the heart and even snarky messages that make us laugh. Share what’s on your mind.
- Wear your resistance. Put your message on a shirt (or buy one from your favorite t-shirt shop).
- Let our voices swell. Boo, chant, cheer, and sing along with those who stand with us.
- Respect the rights of others. Don’t damage property or block traffic, and pick up after yourself.
- Take and make a buddy. There are safety, accountability, and sustainability in numbers. Bring a friend with you and get to know the person beside you singing their heart out and the person with cool sign.
- Choose footwear wisely. Whether you will be marching or standing, you’re going to need a comfy foundation with good arch support. Avoid flip flops.
- Be prepared and stay safe. Pack a daypack with water, snacks, and sunscreen. Stay calm and avoid engaging with agitators.
Here’s wishing you a jubilant and energizing day of civic activism.
